Running Physiotherapy
What Is Running Physiotherapy?
Running physiotherapy covers the assessment and treatment of running related injuries, as well as structured programs designed to support runners in managing their training load and reducing the risk of injury. At Onward Physiotherapy, two dedicated running services are available: an Individual Running Biomechanical Assessment and a 3 Week Running Strength and Injury Prevention Program.
Whether you are dealing with a current injury, coming back from time off, or simply want a thorough understanding of how your body moves when you run, these services are designed to give you clear, practical information and a structured plan.
Individual Running Biomechanical Assessment
The Individual Running Biomechanical Assessment is a 90 minute appointment that takes a detailed look at how you run and what is contributing to your injury or limitations.
The assessment includes:
- Treadmill running filmed from multiple angles to analyse your running technique in detail
- A thorough assessment of your flexibility and mobility
- Strength testing of the key muscle groups involved in running
- Assessment of any current injuries and contributing factors
- A guided session of targeted, running specific exercises designed to support your recovery and reduce the risk of future injury
You leave with a clear picture of how your technique, strength, and flexibility interact, what is contributing to your current problem, and a specific exercise program to take away and use in your own training.
The Individual Running Biomechanical Assessment costs $200 for 90 minutes.
Who This Is For
The running assessment is suited to you if:
- You have a current running injury that is not resolving
- You keep getting injured and want to understand why
- You are training for a marathon, half marathon, parkrun, or Hyrox and want to address your technique and load management before an injury
forces you to stop - You are returning to running after an injury or period of time off
- You want a structured assessment of your running technique and physical capacity
- You are new to running and want to start on the right foot
Common Conditions Treated
Running injuries seen regularly at the clinic include:
- Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
- Knee fat pad impingement
- Plantar fasciitis and plantar fasciopathy
- Tibialis posterior tendinopathy
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Knee pain including patellofemoral pain and iliotibial band syndrome
- Hip and glute related pain
- Calf strains and soleus injuries
- Stress reactions and stress fractures
These conditions are assessed in the context of your full running picture, including your technique, training load, footwear, and physical capacity. Treating the injury in isolation without addressing contributing factors is a common reason why running injuries come back.
3 Week Running Strength and Injury Prevention Program
The 3 Week Running Strength and Injury Prevention Program is a small group program designed for runners who want a structured, guided approach to building the strength and resilience needed to train consistently and reduce the risk of injury.
The program runs over 3 weeks with one 75 minute session per week, capped at 6 participants. The small group format allows for individual attention and exercise modification within each session.
The program covers:
- Running specific strength work targeting the key muscle groups involved in running
- Load management education to help you understand how to train in a way that reduces injury risk
- Technique guidance based on common running movement patterns
- Progressive exercise programming across the 3 sessions
The 3 Week Running Strength and Injury Prevention Program costs $200 for 3 x 75 minute sessions.
Who the Program Is For
The program is suited to runners who:
- Are preparing for an upcoming event such as the Sydney Marathon, Hoka Half Marathon, or a parkrun
- Want to build running specific strength in a structured, guided environment
- Have had running injuries in the past and want to address their physical preparation
